NC500 Motorcycle Adventure

After the amazing success of our NC500 motorcycle trips throughout 2023, 2024,2025 and 2026, we are excited to be returning once again in 2027.By the time we complete this trip it will be our 29th time around the NC500, so we have had plenty of opportunity to refine the route and learn what works best for motorcycle groups. This trip is not about riding around Scotland in one enormous convoy. Large groups simply do not work on many of the narrow and single-track roads of the Highlands. Riders normally split into smaller groups, ride with friends or simply head off on their own during the day. Everyone receives the same daily route information and suggested places to visit, and we all meet up again at the evening campsite. To minimise congestion and remain respectful to local residents and other road users, we limit the trip to a maximum of 30 motorcycles.

OUR CAMPING EQUIPMENT

At every campsite we provide you with a 3-man pop-up tent, together with a raised single camp bed and camping chair.

Maximum occupancy is two people per tent. If you are travelling alone, you will have your own tent.

You simply need to bring your own sleeping bag/bedding and pillow.

We work very much as a team on these trips, so we ask everyone to help put their tent up and take it down each day. These are easy pop-up tents and the process only takes a few minutes.

You don’t need to pack the tent away afterwards — once it is down, we take care of the rest.

We also offer an optional service where you can post your clothes, bedding and other equipment to us before the trip. We bring everything to Scotland in the support vehicle, transport it between campsites throughout the week and post it back to you afterwards.

This means you can enjoy the NC500 without having to carry a week’s worth of camping equipment on your motorcycle.

THE ROUTE

This trip is about experiencing the NC500 rather than simply getting from one campsite to another as quickly as possible.

Every rider receives a printed daily information sheet showing the day’s route, suggested stops, places worth seeing, fuel information and useful campsite details.

You also receive your own NC500 guidebook.

There is no requirement to stop at every suggested location. They are there to help you get as much as possible from each day while still allowing you to ride at your own pace.

FRIDAY 27th – ARRIVAL IN INVERNESS

Bunchrew Caravan Park

We meet at Bunchrew Caravan Park near Inverness at approximately 5:00pm.

This gives everyone plenty of time to arrive, get their tent set up, meet the other riders and have a relaxed evening before we start the NC500 on Saturday morning.

Tonight is about getting settled and preparing for the adventure ahead.

SATURDAY 28th – INVERNESS → APPLECROSS → GAIRLOCH

Approximately 170–180 miles

This is the day the NC500 really begins.

Leaving Bunchrew, we ride west through Beauly, Garve and Achnasheen before heading towards Lochcarron.

From Lochcarron we tackle one of the most famous roads in Scotland — Bealach na Bà.

The spectacular mountain pass climbs steeply towards Applecross with tight hairpins, single-track sections and incredible views when the weather is clear.

After descending into Applecross, there is time for lunch or coffee before continuing north on the stunning coastal road towards Shieldaig.

From Shieldaig we continue through the dramatic mountain scenery of Torridon, then on through Kinlochewe and alongside beautiful Loch Maree.

Tonight we stay at Sands Caravan & Camping near Gairloch.

Sands has an on-site shop and The Barn Café, making it a great location for our first night on the road.

SUNDAY 29th – GAIRLOCH → ULLAPOOL → KYLESKU → SCOURIE

Approximately 105–115 miles

Leaving Gairloch, we continue north through Poolewe and Aultbea, with fantastic coastal scenery around Gruinard Bay.

We then head towards Corrieshalloch Gorge before arriving in Ullapool.

Ullapool is an ideal place for fuel, coffee or lunch before continuing north into the increasingly wild landscape of Assynt.

From here we pass Knockan Crag and Loch Assynt, where the ruins of Ardvreck Castle make a great photo stop.

We then continue towards one of the most recognisable sights on the NC500 — Kylesku Bridge.

After crossing Kylesku, it is a relatively short ride to our overnight campsite at Scourie.

For riders wanting a little more mileage, there is also the option of taking the slower coastal route through Lochinver.

MONDAY 30th – SCOURIE → DURNESS → TONGUE → THURSO

Approximately 105–115 miles

Today takes us through some of the most remote landscapes of the entire NC500.

Leaving Scourie, we ride north towards Durness.

One of today’s major stops is Smoo Cave, a huge sea cave carved into the limestone cliffs close to Durness.

There are also some spectacular beaches along this section of the north coast.

Leaving Durness, we continue east towards Tongue, with fantastic views across the Kyle of Tongue towards Ben Loyal and Ben Hope.

From Tongue we continue through Bettyhill and Melvich, following the north coast before arriving at our campsite overlooking Thurso Bay.

Although today’s mileage isn’t huge, much of the western part of the route is single track, so progress can be slower than the mileage suggests.

TUESDAY – THURSO & THE JOURNEY HOME

After our final brew on Tuesday morning, it will be time to pack up for the final time and say our goodbyes as our NC500 adventure comes to an end.

Unlike previous trips, we will not be returning to the campsite at Bunchrew. Once we leave Thurso, the rest of the day is completely yours.

Before heading south, you may want to take the opportunity to visit Dunnet Head – the most northerly point of mainland Britain – and John O’Groats, where you can grab that all-important photo at the famous signpost.

From there, you can take your time exploring more of the Highlands, stop at places you may have missed during the week, enjoy a relaxed ride south or simply begin making your way home.

Those travelling a longer distance may wish to book overnight accommodation somewhere on the journey home, rather than trying to complete the whole journey in one day.

There is no fixed route or meeting point on Thursday. Everyone is free to make their own plans and travel at their own pace.

There are plenty of places worth considering on the journey south, including Dunrobin Castle, Dornoch, Loch Ness, Culloden Battlefield, the Cairngorms National Park and Pitlochry. You can make a full day of the ride south or simply choose one or two stops that fit naturally with your journey home.

It’s always a little sad saying goodbye after such a great few days together, but hopefully you’ll be heading home with some fantastic memories, new friendships and plenty of stories from your NC500 adventure.

This marks the official end of our trip.

The NC500 is one of those motorcycle trips that everyone should experience at least once. Please note that due to the large numbers of people attending we work very much as a team and will require your assistance in erecting and taking the pop-up tents down each day. This takes a few minutes and is very simple. We are on hand to assist and show you how simple this process really is. We then all muck in to load the trailer.  We also offer a service where you can post us your clothes, bedding and stuff before the trip. We bring it up in the support van and transport it between campsites all week, then at the end of your trip we post it back to you . Save you carrying it on the bike, people like this option and we charge you for the return postage.
